Registration is open for the upcoming 12th Annual San Diego Go Championship, reports the San Diego Go Club. Click here for details. The 3-round AGA rated competition is set for Sunday, April 30, at the San Diego Chess Club in Balboa Park (2225 6th Ave., San Diego, California 92101). Open or Handicap sections can be chosen. “The Open already has three 6-dans registered,” says Tournament Director Ted Terpstra, “so the competition to join Mark Lee 9-dan, Ari Saito 7-dan, and defending champion King Bi 6-dan on the permanent plaque will be intense.” No one has won the SD Championship twice.
Players must register by 11:59 pm Friday, 4/28/23 to play in the first round. On-site registration for rounds 2-3 is allowed.
“This is a true open tournament for anyone, including pros and those not residing in San Diego,” says Terpstra. Pizza will be served to all players for lunch. For non-players, Balboa Park has nine museums, many gardens, a golf course, and the World Famous Zoo. There is also a free outdoor organ concert every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Spreckels Organ (the world’s largest pipe organ in an outdoor venue).
Trophies will be awarded in the Open and three sections of the handicap sections. All are welcome to play including beginners. Traditionally, the youngest player also wins a trophy. The entry fee is $20 for the Open and adults, $10 for youth in the handicap sections. (All entrance fees will be returned in the prize pool).
American Go Association membership is required.
