Noah Johnson Wins First Rhode Island State Championship

Chris Garlock | Published on 9/25/2026

The Providence Go Club hosted the inaugural Rhode Island State Championship and Open on September 19 in Providence, drawing 26 players from across New England, the Tri-State Area and as far away as North Carolina. Noah Johnson 1d won the state title, with Eric Linden 3k finishing runner-up.

The event paired a Rhode Island-only, no-handicap knockout championship with two open divisions. Players ranged from 3 dan to 24 kyu. It was the club’s second tournament, following last year’s Providence Spring Tournament, which organizers believe may have been the first Go tournament held in the state.

Play took place at Farm Fresh RI, which also hosts the club’s weekly meetups. The open-division winners and state championship finalists received trophies depicting the Superman Building in Providence and Point Judith Lighthouse in Narragansett. Game winners received prizes including 3D-printed Go boards, products from Farm Fresh vendors, 101-Weiqi subscriptions and a Go-inspired board game. The club thanks Anchor Toffee, the New England Open organizers and Providence Go Club members for sponsoring prizes.
