Summer arrived with a fury—and with it, the annual dazzle of Burning Board 2025, held June
16–22 in the natural splendor of Umstead State Park, Raleigh, NC. This unique event is known for its outdoor setting, with many attendees lodging on-site in primitive cabins. One of the signature moments: a ceremonial bonfire in which a custom-crafted Go board is set ablaze.
48 players from across the U.S. participated in simuls and lectures led by Yuan Zhou and Michael Chen.
A total of 38 competed in the three-day tournament, with a dozen taking part in the full seven-day experience. Trevor Morris served as tournament director, and Adam and Arlene Bridges kept everyone well-fed with complimentary lunches from the camp kitchen.
In the Open Section, Toby Chen blazed a flawless path to first place with one of only two perfect records. Dalan Robertson scorched his way into second, and Jared Nishikawa rounded out the top three.
In Section A, Paul Celmer claimed first, with Andrew Odesky close behind in second.
Section B saw Adam Bridges take top honors, with Bob Crites placing second.
In Section C, David Rodriguez emerged victorious, followed by David Jakab in second.
Section D glowed with a win from Neal Siekierski, trailed by Matthew Gregoire.
Section E was won by Russell Herman, with Martin Kelley taking second.
And in Section F, Richard Young claimed the second perfect 6–0 record of the event, with Colin Platt earning second place.
David Whatley earned the Most Games Played award in the self-paired tournament—a testament to stamina and passion.
From blazing wins to glowing camaraderie, Burning Board 2025 once again proved that Go and summer fire are a perfect match.
