Rich Chalmers 1k is the 2024 Vermont State Champion, a title he’s held several times in the past. Chalmers went 3-0 for the win in the Vermont Go Championship, which was held at Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT this past Sunday, June 2.
Fourteen players participated in three rounds of play, both a regular handicapped tournament for all and eight players in even games for the state championship. Most players were Vermonters, “but we had representation from Massachusetts, Maine, and California as well,” reports tournament director Pete Schumer.
All of Chalmers’ games “were played on a beautiful traditional kaya Go board with traditional stones and bowls,” reports Schumer, a 3 kyu who finished second (2 - 1) losing to Chalmers in the final. In addition, two other players had 3 - 0 records in the handicapped division - Gil McCann 7k (3 - 0) and Noah Rizika 9k (3 - 0). “All winners are hoping to improve their ranking!” says Schumer.
Other players who finished with winning records include Jack Cary 2k (2 - 1), Bill Arrand 2k (2 - 1), and Jonathan Green 2k (2 - 1). Prizes included trophies, go sets, books, journals, and honey.
